Personal History: Sileen Elizabeth Ley (Sil to her friends) was born on Earth, the love child of a horticulture student and a freighter pilot. Her mother was attending college in Miami, Florida and went with a group of girlfriends up the coast to Canaveral Space Port. As Sil was told... “To meet some of those sexy pilots and have a wild weekend.” Nine months later, Sileen E was born to the modest surroundings of a college dormitory room.

As a child, Sil hardly ever saw her father. He took his financial responsibility of raising his child to heart and sent funds so Sil's mom didn't have to quit school, but luxury living was not in the cards for mom nor Sil. The two found themselves moving often to stay ahead of the next rent increase or to try to be near Sil's father, wherever he may land.

Throughout her young life she attended public schools as her mother gained experience in her chosen profession and her father continued to fly whatever he could get his hands on. Then at the age of 13. with the promise of being a real family, Sil's mother and father finally married. He had an opportunity to fly a merchant ship out of Utopia Planitia), giving him an opportunity to return regularly to home port and her mother was able to get a job at the colony farms. So off to Mars they went. Shortly after getting settled into their new home, Sil's mother announced that she was pregnant.

Life wasn't that exciting, though Sil and her new found best friend, Sal, did manage to get into trouble on occasion, sneaking into restricted areas just to see what they could see and giggling at Star Fleet crews, mostly the males, who took leave while their ships were being refitted or repaired.

As the trappings of teenage silliness began to fade and she and Sal began to mature, both desired the adventure and excitement that Star Fleet seemed to offer. Their grades in school were passable and they really wanted to be somewhere else. Both had memories of Earth and both were fed up with living at home under the frowning eyes of their parents. Something had to give.

So at the age of 20, both Sil and Sal announced that they were applying to Star Fleet Academy.

Most Crucial Experience: Sil decided to become a doctor when her baby brother was injured when she was supposed to be watching him. She was distracted with her “girl stuff” and lost track of him. She had to act fast to stop the bleeding and felt unequipped to save him. Though she was able to keep him alive and get him to medical care, as she watched the doctors save him, she vowed she would never be caught again without the knowledge needed to save those she loved.
Role Model: Her father who told her tales of the galaxy and alien races.
